Hadrien de Montferrand Gallery has developed its exhibition roster to showcase young Chinese creators and international contemporary artists. In 2013, the gallery opened a second space in Hangzhou. This first international gallery in Zhejiang allows us to feature young promising artists.
ABOUT ARTISTS
Chen Han (b.1973) graduated in 2005 from the Lu Xun Academy of Fine Arts. Over the last decade Chen Han has developed a very specific style inspired by film noir in which male and female characters interact in a dramatic way. The works of Chen Han therefore give us a sense of uneasiness while at the same time making us partake into intimate moments. With his painterly portraits and still lives. Chen Han produces a crepuscular and private world for us to tiptoe through.

Chiharu Shiota (b.1972) majored in painting at university and in Becoming Paint(1994), one of her first performances, presented while studying abroad in Australia, the red enamel painted artist turned herself into a painting. Even though she is widely known for her monumental installations, she never stopped painting and drawings.

Hao Shiming (b.1973) graduated from the traditional painting department of the Tianjin Fine Arts academy in 2000. He has combined Chinese philosophies and personal interests, developing a very unique style through the systematical doubling of the strokes. While most works use 2 colours, the artist also offers more colourful paintings in his other series by inserting golden or red ink touches, creating new contrasts.

Lu Chao (b.1988) graduated in 2014 from the Painting Department of the Royal College of Art in London (Master of Arts), and in 2012 from the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing, China. He consistently portrays a crowd and interrogates the relationship between the individual and his surroundings. His recent work Man on Wire (2015)¡¯'s reference to Abstract Expressionist masters, such as Jackson Pollock and Franz Kline.

Pan Xiaorong (b.1985) is a representative of the new abstraction movement that arose in China in the last half decade and carries on the quest for structure, space, line and repetitions by combining western references with Chinese elements opened by Ding Yi in 1988. Pan Xiaorong has been rigourously painting black-and-white and geometrically structured cardboard carvings with meticulous accuracy.

Tian Zhe (b.1982), graduated from Luxun Academy of Fine Arts, an academy renowned for its realist aesthetics, expresses notions of spirituality and identity through subtly-coloured expressionist paintings. He combines watercolor and simple shapes to create elusive figures and offers his own perception of the body.

Yu Jidong (b.1976) graduated from Minzu University of China (Beijing). Yu Jidong¡¯'s drawing technique is very simple: besides a Chinese brush and a coffee pot with a long spout, he does not employ any other tool, when choosing the pigments, apart from traditional Chinese ink (ink, ink stick), he only uses traditional cyanine and rouge. Through the use of simple tools and traditional dyes, Yu Jidong evokes the soul of the paintings, expressing their traditional spirit in a modern way.

Zhang Xuerui (b.1979), graduated from the Central Academy of Fine Arts in 2004.What is unique about Zhang is that, given her attitude towards"colour", she does not over highlight"colour". There is no emphasis on primary colours, nor does her work rely on existing colours. Instead, she treats"colour" as"void", and investigates the possibilities of work from this attitude and perspective. Namely, she seeks colours that can represent a new kind of space, or the opposite - those colours fly to her.

Zhu Xinyu (b.1980) is a graduate of Luxun Academy of Fine Arts in northern China. He is known for his analysis of landscapes and nature, using a palette of subtle tones, muted colours and a use of light akin to that of chiaroscuro by Renaissance masters. The world he creates, at once sublime, frightening and alluring, invites the audience to embark on an imaginary journey.
